Oft-quoted quotes that were never spoken by said character. Eventually, I came to terms with having to kill off more than a few entries to get everything to work, and left many memorable unspoken "lines" on the cutting room floor: "Luke, I am your father" (Darth Vader), "No more wire hangers!" (Joan Crawford), and "I want to suck your blood" (Count Dracula), to name a few. The problem was that there were too many good entries I wanted to include, which always resulted in a puzzle with sub-par fill. He added that, having said that, this idea was a "maybe." That "maybe" was all it took to keep the idea alive over the years, and I would return to it every so often, but could never get it just right. I emailed him about this idea in 2007, and he politely informed me that he could no longer accept theme queries due to the huge volume of email he was receiving. Google revealed that there are many such lines firmly cemented in our psyches despite having never been uttered.īack in the early 2000s when I started making puzzles, Will would accept the occasional theme query for a Sunday puzzle, since it takes so much more work to make one.

Effortless assimilation crossword movie#
I thought it would be cool to make a puzzle of famous movie and TV lines that were never actually said, even though we're all familiar with them. Here, it was the other way around: the title came first, and the theme idea came second. May be a tall order….Typically, when I have an idea for a Sunday puzzle, I'll put the puzzle together and then have to wrack my brain for a good title. THESE WILL BE REFINED OVER TIME BASED ON DISCUSSIONS SO THAT COLLECTIVE & CUMULATIVE KNOWLEDGE BASE IS CREATED….BUILD HIERARCHY OF CONCEPTS ( FROM BASICS TO COMPLEX / FROM GROSS TO SUBLIME).

No. The contests in our forums are at times reduced something like Reality-TV show voting! We ask certain experts about about KOSHERNESS of clues without trying to equip ourselves with understanding of the cryptic. We judge clues not on merit of the clue but on basis of the setter. We like a clue because it is liked by many others or endorsed by experts. We go gaga over clues with attractive surfaces ignoring blatant fundamental errors. We bend rules without realising and do not appreciate if an objection is made to the same. We have such wonderful talent but we make clues too casually or without understanding that there are rules to be followed. I am bit distraught with the Indian Crossword scene. Voting is very objective and remarks are so illuminating) and very recently the DIYCOW (UK group again – great weekly contests and amazing quality of clues and judging.) Learnt much from puritanical taskmasters like Peter Biddlecome and the maverick like David Akenhead), the CCCWC ( UK group.

I picked up lot from my experience in GOOGLE GROUP (It is quite multi-continental group but with dwindling active membership. I have spent time understanding the nuances of cryptic crossword theory. I am not a particularly great setter or solver but I am pretty good at the analysis. I learned the basics myself by analysing the solution with the clues of the previous day crossword in Indian Express or the Sunday Times. I have been a cryptic crossworder since 1980s.
